How to Survive in Survival Mode in Minecraft

Survival Mode in Minecraft is no walk in the park. With the elements and enemies out to get you, you need to know some tricks and strategies for survival.

Part 1

Part 1 of 6:

Getting Basic Resources

Get wood. Find about two trees and chop them down completely. Chopping down trees gives you wood, which can be used to create crafting tables, build houses, make chests and more. One piece of wood can be used to make four wood planks, which can be helpful.

Convert all of your wood into wooden planks. Wood can't do very much for you but wooden planks are extremely useful in Minecraft.

Create a crafting table. This will be necessary if you want to make almost anything. Now you will have a wide variety of things that you can craft.

Find some animals. If you have to travel a long way to do this, just do it. Kill a few and make sure that you kill at least three sheep before moving on to the next step.
- Cows give you beef and leather.
- Pigs give you pork.
- Chickens give you chicken, eggs, and feathers.
- Horses give you leather.
- Sheep give you wool and mutton.
- Llamas give you leather.
- Fish give you fish and bones.
- Cats give you string.
- Rabbits give you rabbit and rabbit hide.
- Squids give you ink sacs.
- Sea turtles give you nautilus shells.

Create a bed using your crafting table. This will cost three wool and three wooden planks. There is no way to sleep and repair yourself without a bed.

Craft a door. You will need some wood, but that's all.

Craft a chest to store valuable items. That way, if you die, you won't lose anything super important.
- You can turn on "Keep Inventory", which means that when you die you won't lose anything in your inventory. This is considered cheating, but if you don't want to lose your hard work this is a good option.

Kill monsters at nighttime. Monsters often spawn with some kind of armor on, which can sometimes be dropped when you kill them. It also raises your experience level.
- Skeletons give you arrows and bones.
- Creepers give you gunpowder.
- Spiders drop string and spider eyes.
- Wither skeletons drop coal and bones.
- Drowned drop tridents and nautilus shells.
- Witches drop potions.
- A zombified piglin drops gold swords.
- An iron golem drops 3-5 iron ingots and poppies.

Go fishing. Build a fishing rod and fish. Not only can you get fish, but you can also get enchanted books, enchanted fishing rods, leather, glass bottles, enchanted bows, and more. It's a great way to get good items for free.

Part 2 of 6:

Building A House

Choose a material. The best and quickest option is dirt but if there is no dirt around you there are plenty of other options such as cobblestone and sandstone.

Decide on how big you want your house to be. Consider how many chests, beds, furnaces and any other supplies you will want to put in there. Remember, this is not meant to be fancy.

Collect a lot of your chosen material. Two lots of 64 is good for a normal-sized house but you may want more for a larger house.

Create or find a flat surface for your house. It will be annoying if it is too jagged.

Draw out the perimeter of your house with your chosen blocks. A good perimeter for your first house is probably about 10 by 12 blocks.

Sit on a corner of your house. Jump and click on the corner with your block before you land. Do this as many times as you want your house to be tall. A good starting height is five blocks high. Remember to include the base block.

Build each perimeter block up to the top of the corners. Once you are done you will have a complete wall.

Use the jump and click method from step six to get up to the top of your walls. Build across the top to create a roof. Once you are done destroy the blocks you used to get up as you come down.

At the place you wish to be the front of your house destroy one of the blocks on the bottom layer. Once you have done this destroy the one directly above it to create a door space.

Part 3 of 6:

Decorating Your House

Place a door on the ground of the door passage. Now monsters won't be able to enter your home.

Place your bed somewhere in your house. Remember that if you die this will be your spawning point forever.

Place any furnace's, chest's and crafting tables in your house.

If you would like to see what is going n outside you can collect sand and put it in a furnace. This will create glass. Make a lot of this so that you can craft glass panes. Build holes in your walls and fill them in with the glass pane's.

Part 4 of 6:

Getting Food To Eat

Make sure that you have a furnace. This will be necessary to cook your food. Craft it with some cobblestone.

Find some local animals. Kill them and collect their meat. You will get this from cows, pigs, sheep and chickens. Bring the meat back home.

Put the meat of your animals in your furnace. Place wood/your fuel of choosing at the bottom of it. This will cook them so you can eat them.

If you have water nearby you can go fishing. Craft a fishing rod with woolen thread (from spiders) and a stick.

Throw your fishing rod into the water. You will have to wait patiently before you see bubbles, when you should reel it back in.

Cook any fish you catch. Eating raw fish may cause you to lose hearts.

Part 5 of 6:

Creating Tools

Craft a wooden pickaxe. This will use up some sticks and wooden planks.

Dig up cobblestone with the wooden pickaxe until it runs out. Cobblestone is very useful in creating tools.

If you want to grow plants, make a hoe with cobblestone and sticks. This will make the grass ready and is also a way for you to collect seeds to plant with.

If you want to mine, make a pickaxe with cobblestone and sticks. This will make it easy for you to dig up iron and types of stones. A cobblestone pickaxe will last a long time as well.

If you want to dig up dirt or sand, make a shovel with cobblestone and sticks. This will make it easy to collect different types of material. It can also be used to collect snow.

If you want to collect wood, make an axe with cobblestone and sticks. This will make it much quicker and easier to chop down wood and will last for a long time.

If you want to kill anything, make a sword with cobblestone and sticks. This will increase the damage caused by you hitting a monster, animal or other player.

If you want to kill anything from a distance, make a bow and some arrows. Bows can be made with some woolen string (obtained from spiders) and a stick. Arrows are made from sticks and feathers.

Part 6 of 6:

Avoiding Death

Avoid collisions with monsters. Using a bow and arrow is a good way to do this as you can kill them from a long way away. Go to bed as early as possible to stop them from creeping up on you.

Never dig down in a mine. Always build stairs or across. If you build down you might fall into a cave, where you will have limited resources and lives. You could also fall into a lava pool.

Watch out for fire. You could get burnt extremely quickly.

Try to avoid mobs. Place torches in advance, as this will keep mobs from spawning (they don't spawn in light). You can wear armor or craft a shield to block some damage. Eat food often so you regenerate your lost health. Avoid fall damage and sleep as early as possible so mobs don't spawn. Fight mobs with corresponding tactics so you aren't hit as much. Hit a creeper, then walk backwards so their timer resets. Move around skeletons in circles so their arrows miss. Don't look straight at endermen, and walk backwards while fighting zombies and spiders.
