Trying to compost your food and plant items in Minecraft? Make a composter! All you need is 2 logs. The crafting and using process is quick and easy. You can compost common items like apples, carrots, sugar cane, and cake. This wikiHow guide will show you how to make and use a composter in Minecraft.
Things You Should Know
- You’ll need two logs of any matching type to craft the composter.
- Turn the logs into planks and the planks into wood slabs.
- Use the composter while holding food or plants to potentially add a layer of compost.
- Use the composter when it has 7 layers of compost to collect bone meal.
Steps
Crafting the Composter
-
1Collect 2 logs. You can get logs by chopping down trees, a classic experience while playing Minecraft. Any matching type of log will work!
- Note that this method is for crafting the composter item. You can also find composters in village farms.[1]
-
2Craft 6 planks. You’ll need planks to craft the wood slabs for the composter. To craft the planks:[2]
- Place the 2 logs in the center slot of the 3-by-3 crafting menu.
- Click the 4 crafted planks in the result slot twice to collect a total of 8 planks.

3Craft 7 wood slabs. You’ll need 7 wood slabs to create the compost item. To craft wood slabs:[3]
- Place 2 planks in the bottom left slot of the 3-by-3 crafting menu.
- Place 2 planks in the bottom middle slot.
- Place 2 planks in the bottom right slot.
- Click the 6 crafted wood slabs in the result slot twice to collect a total of 12 wood slabs.
-
4Craft the composter. This final crafting also occurs in the 3-by-3 crafting menu. To make the composter, place 1 wood slab in the following slots to create a “U” shape, then click the composter in the result slot.
- top left
- middle left
- bottom left
- bottom middle
- bottom right
- middle right

Using the Composter
-
1Right-click to place the composter. You can place it in your modern Minecraft house or maybe a more natural treehouse.
-
2Use the composter. The composter converts food and plants into bone meal. Items have a certain chance of composting when added to the composter (this varies from 30 to 100 percent depending on the item).
-
3Hold the item you want to compost in your hand. For example, this could be a cactus, vines, or bread.
-
4Press the use button while looking at the composter to add the item to the composter. A green particle will appear if the item was successfully composted.
- Repeat this process until 7 layers of compost accumulate in the composter. Once this is achieved, you can collect bone meal from the composter.
-
5Press the use button on the composter with an empty hand. When the composter has 7 layers of compost, pressing the use button on the composter will collect the bone meal.
