Do you want to upgrade the RAM (Memory) in your computer but you have no idea where it goes? Read on!
Steps
-
1Purchase RAM that is compatible with your computer. There are different types of Random Access Memory. Some may work with your computer, and some may not. Consult the owner's manual for your computer or mother board to determine the correct RAM type.
-
2Remove the cover or access panel from your computer. Most computers will have thumb screws, Philips screws, or push buttons to open the case or remove the side panel. Locate the screws or buttons and remove the access panel or door.Advertisement

3Locate the RAM Slots. Most standard desktop computers will have two, four, or six slots. They are often grouped together and at least one of the available slots will already contain a memory module, as you must have RAM fitted to your computer for it to boot.
- In newer machines, the RAM slots will be coloured. It is best to fill each colour first, rather than shoving the RAM in wherever.
-
4Insert the RAM. Note on the module there is an off-center indent, line this up with the bump in the slot to ensure the RAM is correctly seated.
- Apply pressure to the corners, and do not be afraid to push.
- Keep pushing until you hear a click, or the holding tabs on either side flip snugly into the indentations on either end of the module.

QuestionIs it possible to add 4 GB of RAM to my PC, which already has 2 GB of RAM?Community AnswerMost likely. Check your model on the manufacturer's website (or reference your motherboard manual, if your PC is home-built). It will tell you the maximum configuration for each bank. Depending on the number of slots available (and the compatibility of old RAM and new), you may have to replace the 2 GB with the 4 GB of RAM (which is a great idea, if it's possible, to boost your speed). Ideally, though, you'll be able to use both old and new together for a turbo-boost of 6 GB of RAM.
-
QuestionHow much will it cost me to buy more memory?Community AnswerIt depends on how much you are going to buy. If you want 4GB, it will be around $20 - $30 CDN. If you want 8GB it will be around $50 - $60 CDN. If you want 16GB it will be around $100 - $110 CDN, and if you want 32GB it will be around $180 - $210 CDN.

QuestionWhat does it cost to add memory to a laptop?Community AnswerIt depends on what brand, type, how much memory is on 1 stick, and many other factors.
