Need to fly in survival mode? Elytra is a special type of armor you can use as wings to help you glide. It can be hard to find elytra in Minecraft on your own, so we'll walk you through the journey. This wikiHow article will show you how to find elytra in Minecraft, and how to use your new wings to fly.

Part 1
Part 1 of 2:

Obtaining the Elytra

  1. 1
Use an End Portal to go into the End.
  2. 2
Defeat the Ender Dragon (also very difficult in Survival). This will create a small contraption containing a strange, sparkly block somewhere outside the main island.

  3. 3
Shoot an arrow into the block. If the arrow does not trigger that, try throwing an ender pearl in the middle block (which is actually a block of End Portal material).
    • You will be teleported to a different type of End, consisting of many different-sized islands (don't fall off!) that have forests of purple plants called chorus plants.
  4. 4
Find an end city. End cities are towers (not actually cities) that have a spiral staircase that leads up to a dock.
  5. 5
Look for a ship-like building, about 30 blocks from the dock. Enter this ship.
  6. 6
Go into the bottom deck. There will be a chest containing lots of iron and diamond.
  7. 7
Near the chest, look for an item frame containing a pair of wings. These are the elytra. Break the item frame. This will cause the elytra to drop, allowing you to get them.
  8. 8
    Exit the end.

Part 2
Part 2 of 2:

Using the Elytra

  1. 1
Find a high place. You'll need ladders or a bunch of blocks. (Ladders would be better, since you can climb down them.)
  2. 2
    Jump off the high place.
  3. 3
In mid-air, use the jump button again. This will cause you to glide.
  4. 4
Look left to turn left; look right to turn right. Look up to temporarily rise, but doing so for too long will cause you to stall, which will make you fall faster. Look down to descend rapidly. Looking down long enough will raise your momentum to where you can look up suddenly and fly much higher.

Community Q&A

  • Question
What monsters are in the end city?

    Community Answer
As always in the end, there will be Endermen, but there is a dangerous mob known as the Shulker that hide in end cities. They look similar to purpur blocks, but don't be fooled. They have zig-zagged shells that can open up, allowing them to shoot special projectiles at you that cause you to float upward for 30 seconds. They also will teleport occasionally if you hit them.
  • Question
Why is PC Minecraft more advanced than it is on other devices?
    Community Answer
    Community Answer
The PC version of the game was developed first, and computers usually have more memory than phones, both of which contribute to more advanced game play.
  • Question
How do I go in 1-block holes with Elytra?

Get moving fast enough, and with a good amount of precision, agility, and luck, you can zip through the hole easily.

Warnings

  • Landing with an Elytra will cause fall damage. Avoid this by looking at the horizon when you are about to land.

  • It is easy to get lost in the second end. Build a trail.

  • End cities have hostile mobs called shulkers, which shoot small floating projectiles at you. These projectiles will cause you to float upward for 30 seconds. Shulkers look similar to the purple blocks that are found in abundance in end cites, except that they have a zig-zag down the middle, signifying the crack between their shells.

  • Defeating the Ender Dragon is hard. Make sure you have proper equipment.
