Gas stoves are great for cooking but they can be difficult to clean. Learning to clean your gas stove properly will save you a lot of time and frustration. To clean your gas stove simply remove the burner parts, clean the stovetop, and clean the burners in the sink.
Things You Should Know
- Once the stove is cool, remove the burner grates and caps, and place them in the sink.
- Submerge the grates and caps in hot water with a drizzle of dish soap and let them soak.
- Scrub the stovetop and all burner parts with dish soap, water, and a sponge.
- Rinse and air-dry all the parts, or use a clean rag to dry them off.
Steps
Preparing the Stove for Cleaning
-
1Allow your stove to cool. Turn off all your gas burners and allow the stove to cool down completely before cleaning. Cleaning a stove while it is hot can result in injury.
-
2Remove the burner grates and caps. Once the burners are cool, lift them away from the stove. Place them in the sink.[1]
- Burners can be placed in a large bucket or wash basin if a sink is not available.

3Fill the sink with hot water and dish soap. Completely submerge the burners in hot water. Add a drizzle of dish soap to the water while it is running to create suds. Allow the burners to soak while you clean the stove.[2]
Cleaning the Stovetop
-
1Brush away loose debris. With a cleaning brush or paper towel, brush away any loose debris. Don’t worry too much about scraping caked on food and grime.[3]
-
2Scrub the stovetop. Clean the top of the stove using a stovetop cleaner or soapy water. With a clean rag or sponge, scrub the surface. Pay close attention to caked on food and grime. Don’t forget to scrub the knobs and face.[4]
- Spray some cleaner on tough spots and let it soak for five minutes before scrubbing. This will help to loosen the grime.
-
3Clean around the burners. Use a toothbrush to get into the crooks where the burners and caps sit. These areas can be tough to reach with a rag. Then wipe the area clean with a rag.[5]
-
4Dry the stove. Use a clean cloth or paper towel to dry the stove’s surface. Drying the stove’s surface will prevent streaking and make your stove’s surface shine.[6]
Cleaning the Burners
-
1Scrub the burner grates. Using a toothbrush or sponge, wash the burner grates that were soaking in the sink. Most of the grime will wipe away fairly easy since they have been soaking for several minutes. Set the clean burners off to the side.[7]
-
2Scrub the burner caps. Using the same toothbrush or sponge, wash the burner caps. Set them off to the side with the burners.[8]
-
3Rinse the burner parts. With fresh, warm water, thoroughly rinse the burner grates and caps. Be sure rinse away all of the soapy residue.[9]
- If the burners still aren’t clean after using dish soap, try a heavy-duty degreaser instead.
-
4Dry the burner parts. Set the burner grates and caps on a mat to air dry. If you want the pieces to dry quickly, wipe them dry with a clean cloth or paper towel.[10]
-
5Secure the burner parts back on the stove. Once the parts are completely dry, place them back on the stovetop in their proper positions. Your stove is now ready for use once again.

Let the degreaser set into the grates for at least a few minutes, then wipe it away and rinse with water.
