The first series centers around humanity rebuilding a crashed alien ship into its main flag ship: the SDF‑1 Macross. In the process of studying the crashed ship, humanity learns of the existence of a race of gigantic humanoids called the Zentradi. In anticipation of a coming conflict with the Zentradi, mankind develops several weapons, including the Valkyrie fighter, which transforms into a humanoid form for close-quarters combat. The arrival of a Zentradi fleet triggers a dormant boobytrap in the Macross which made it automatically fire on the incoming fleet, starting the Space War.
