2v2 is a game mode in Clash Royale where you have a teammate and face another team of 2 players. You can either play with a random teammate, a friend, or your clanmates. Since there are no trophies to gain or lose, 2v2 was designed to be a stress-free game mode as an alternative to ladder, but there’s still a lot of strategies involved.

Part 1
Part 1 of 2:

Making a Good Deck

  1. 1
Avoid using a siege, cycle, or spell-bait deck. Spell-bait decks don’t work as well because there will be more cards on the field which means your horde win conditions will be more easily countered. Siege decks don't do as well after you've lost a tower since the enemy can just place troops right on top of your X-Bow/Mortar win condition.
    • You can have a hybrid deck that is half siege/spell-bait but have another win condition as well, such as Miner or Princess (Cards that can easily and quickly begin attacking the towers).
    • Cycle decks rely on out cycling your opponent's defenses to get your win condition to the tower when they don't have it in hand. However, during 2v2, you'll have to out-cycle two players' defenses, which is nearly impossible unless your teammate is also cycling, but that is unlikely, and teammates usually don't cooperate very well during battle.
  2. 2
Don’t use your ladder deck. 2v2 is an entire other game mode and you should make a new deck, or tailor your ladder deck to work better in 2v2. These generally don't work as well because they are designed to defeat one opponent, not two.

  3. 3
Make a sword and shield deck if you know the person you will be playing with. This is a strategy where one person will have a deck with a stronger offense and the other person will have a stronger defense. Both decks will be balanced, but this clearly defines who will react first when defending and who will initiate building up an attack. These decks might overlap in some card roles, so pick a slightly different card (such as Knight in one deck and Ice Golem in the other) for a greater variety of troops.
    • Here are the slots for building a sword deck (more offensive).
      • Win condition which is a heavy tank (think Lava Hound, P.E.K.K.A., or Golem)
      • Win condition support which is a glass cannon (such as Mega Minion, Archers, Musketeer, or Hunter)
      • Counter push leader which will be a mini-tank (maybe Knight, Mini Pekka, Lumberjack, or Miner)
      • Main defense which will be a building or spawner (Inferno Tower, Furnace, Goblin Hut, Tombstone)
      • Crowd control unit or splash attacker (think Executioner, Wizard, Princess, or Fire Spirit)
      • Versatile response card which is cheap and good at defense (such as Goblins, Bats, or Ice Spirit). If you run Executioner, this is also a good slot for a Tornado.
      • Heavy spell (Rocket, Lightning, Fireball, Poison.) You could also slot Mirror here, as it would help improve your versatile response card or layer your light spell card. This would be good for Clone too, as it substitutes Mirror if you don't have it, or if you just simply favor Clone over Mirror. The drawback with Clone is that you can only clone troops, not buildings or spells.
      • Light spell (Log, Zap, Arrows, Tornado)
    • Fill in the slots for the Shield deck.
      • Lighter tank (Giants like Royal Giant and Classic Giant are recommended, but Valkyrie, or Miner are also options)
      • Win condition support (Night Witch, Ice Wizard, Bandit, Dark Prince)
      • Main defensive building which can be a spawner (Furnace, Tesla, Inferno Tower)
      • Main defensive troop which is a tank killer (Mini Pekka, Inferno Dragon, Hunter)
      • Defensive support, which should be cheap (Zappies, Ice Golem, Minions, Electro/Heal Spirit). This can be filled by Tornado as well, more favorably, again, if you run Executioner.
      • Crowd controller, or splash unit (Bowler, Executioner, Baby Dragon, )
      • Heavy spell (Fireball, Poison, Lightning, Rocket)
      • Light spell (such as Log, Zap, Arrows, Tornado)
  4. 4
Have a heavy tank or win condition. These are the cards that will soak up damage for the support units and heavy hitters behind it. Although win conditions are ideal for taking towers, most tanks also hit pretty hard. Make sure these cards are at an appropriate level for your arena to be strong enough to be a threat.
    • Some examples of win conditions that are good in 2v2 are Balloon, Golem, Giant, and Rocket (for spell cycling).
    • You can also include 2 or even 3 win conditions in one deck. These are backups in case you are not facing a good matchup and allow you to switch to a slightly different playstyle. You might have a P.E.K.K.A Miner + Balloon, or Golem Minion Horde + Mega Knight deck.
  5. 5
Include splash cards. With double the amount cards on the field (and often clumped together), splash cards and AOE (area of effect) spells will be doubly effective. These will be able to deal damage to several units at once and are especially good paired with Tornado.
    • You could have Executioner, Princess, and Wizard as examples.
    • You must be careful not to let your splash units clump up together as a Rocket could give the enemy a large positive elixir trade.
  6. 6
Have a building. Some deal damage to enemy troops and others spawn units every few seconds. In 2v2, it’s better to have a high hitpoint building so it can get more value and survive longer. Spawners are also good since the continual flow of troops allow you to get a positive elixir trade if your opponents defend or tower damage if they don’t.
    • Some good buildings to include in your deck are Inferno Tower, Goblin Hut, Furnace, and Tesla.
  7. 7
Put in at least 2 direct damage spells. One should be a heavy spell (Rocket is good, but Fireball, Tornado and Poison are 4 elixir and have medium to heavier light spell damage) and one should be light (Arrows, Log, or Zap). These will finish off towers, kill medium health support units ("fireballies"), and Zap (and usually The Log, exception is Sparky) can stun and reset cards.
  8. 8
Know which cards don't work well in 2v2. Hog Rider, Graveyard, and Elixir Collector aren't as good. You also shouldn't have too many swarm units. 1 or 2 in a deck is just fine, but having more renders your deck vulnerable. Avoid including these cards in your deck if possible and play something else.
    • Graveyard is difficult to use because you will have to place it off center of the tower (or you might activate the kings).
    • Hog Rider isn't as good in this game mode since there will be more buildings and troops to counter him. If you want to use hog, use it as a secondary win condition or a punish card for when your opponents over commit on elixir.
      • You can use Hog Rider along with, say a Golem, and play it in the center (so he jumps over the river) to take out a building in the center of the arena.
  9. 9
Include cycle and versatile response cards. These are used whenever they need to be and are usually 3 elixir or less (sometimes 4 elixir). Cycle cards are played to get to another card in your deck that’s better to use. Versatile response cards will be your runners and the backup defensive units, to use whenever you need them. Both help you make positive elixir trades, as they can counter something expensive for a small amount of elixir.
    • Skeletons and Ice Spirit are cycle cards.
    • 2 elixir cards like Bats, Spear Goblins, and Fire Spirits are mostly a midpoint between cycle and versatile response.
    • Ice Golem, Knight, Electro Wizard, Tornado, Goblins, Minions are versatile response cards.

Part 2
Part 2 of 2:

Playing During Battle

  1. 1
Be respectful to your fellow players. Don’t BM (have bad manners) or overuse emotes when you destroy your opponents’ towers or beat them. Avoid disconnecting from the battle, leaving your teammate with no hope to win. This should apply to all game modes, but 2v2 is casual and BMing there is without cause.[1]
    • If someone is BMing you, just mute them. You should be the better player instead of reducing yourself to their level and still be polite. It’s just not worth it.
    • Examples of BMing include saying “Thanks” when you destroy a tower or at the end when the crowns are displayed and saying “Good game” before the game is over.
    • Remember the human on the other side of the screen. Say “Good luck!”, give them a thumbs-up, press “Well played!” and “Good game!” or don’t use emotes at all.
  2. 2
Look at your teammate’s cards. At the beginning of the battle, your opponent’s deck will flash across the screen. Remember their win condition(s), spells, and buildings if possible. You can also click on their name during battle to look at their hand and get an estimate of their elixir. Know when they have a better counter in hand than you do and let them play it.
  3. 3
Have a good starting play. Do not commit to playing a high elixir cost card at the beginning of the match such as a Golem. You don’t know what your opponents’ cards are (they could have a P.E.K.K.A. or Inferno Dragon) and you can be easily rushed in the opposite lane. Any 3 elixir or less card that isn’t a building or a spell is a good starting play because it won’t leave you too vulnerable to an attack.
    • Examples are Ice Spirit at the bridge, Knight played in the back, and splitting skeletons in front of the King Tower.
    • This ties into making sure you do not have too many dead cards in your deck, or cards that aren’t good starting moves. You should always have a card you can play safely without fear of being open to a particular troop or attack.
  4. 4
Avoid rushing the bridge and overcommitting. Initial tower rushes at the start of the map are not the best play to make. Your opponents will easily counter it (especially if you only send a Hog Rider) and you'll have to deal with the counter push with less elixir. Overcommitting is when you put too much elixir in one lane (usually for rushing the bridge) and get punished by your opponent's attack since you are not able to defend. This is something that usually comes with more experience in the game; as you play more, you'll get the hang of spending elixir and knowing when to attack and when to defend.
    • If you want to get some damage on the tower at the beginning, play only a small cheap troop to get chip damage.
    • Don't commit to a high-elixir cost card unless you have an elixir advantage or are at 10 elixir.
  5. 5
Don't respond to everything, especially if you don't have the best counter in hand. Remember, you have another person on your side and chances are, they will have a card that can counter your opponents' units. If they have a better counter, then let them play it, but if they are low on elixir/saving up to play an expensive unit you should pick up the slack on defense.
    • This is a great example of why looking at your teammate's cards are important. Remember, you can tap and hold their name so you can see their hand.
    • Many people who do this end up never playing their win condition. While in some situations, you might realize that your deck isn't suited to the matchup, but if that isn't the case, how will you win if you never play your main tower-attacking unit?
  6. 6
Know the strengths and weaknesses of each card. This is something you must know to win any match, but it's surprising how many people don't have a grip on this. In Clash Royale, there is a triangle where swarms beat a single target troop, splash units beat swarms (when placed with some distance), and single target troops beat splash (when placed right on top). This isn't always true, but it works in a lot of situations.
    • You shouldn’t place a Mini P.E.K.K.A. in the middle of a Skeleton Army and you shouldn’t place a Wizard on top of a Mini P.E.K.K.A. The Wizard will also kill the Skeleton Army unless it gets surrounded by the skeletons.
    • So, don't play Skeleton Army around a Valkyrie since it will lose every single time. Don't place P.E.K.K.A. under a Minion Horde because it will always die.
  7. 7
Hover your cards before playing. Especially in the case of spells, you should hover your card where you’re going to place it so your teammate can support your attack or knows not to place their card too. If a Goblin Barrel is coming, get your Log ready ahead of time, so that you and your teammate don’t waste elixir (and not have a counter) by both playing a spell.
    • This also applies to Miner pushes (hover your Miner), Rockets, buildings, tanks played in the back, and more. Basically, if you have time to hover a card, you should do it.
  8. 8
Space your cards out. There will be twice as many cards on the same size arena, so you will need to avoid bunching your troops together. A spell can get very good value if you don’t. If your teammate plays a card behind the king tower, avoid playing another card on the same side, or your opponents could play a Rocket, hitting your tower and both troops.
    • You might be focusing only on spreading troops on your side of the arena, but don't allow the bridge to get your opponents some value either. A spell can be placed anywhere so you should always space your cards out.
  9. 9
Support your teammate’s attacks and defense. This is a 2 player game mode and pushing separately will lead to your 1 person push being easily countered by a 2 player defense. Attack together and support each other with spells when needed. Check whenever you can on the amount of elixir your teammate has and the cards in their hand.
    • If they play a Golem in the back, don't go and play your Giant at the bridge in the opposite lane. Most likely, both pushes will fail since they won't have enough support behind them.
    • Effects such as Rage, Clone, and Heal will work on both of your troops.
    • Do not support their pushes if they are half-baked. If they place a knight at the bridge and you are only at half elixir, don’t play anything to support it. Save your elixir to defend the remaining troops from the incoming defense.
  10. 10
Know when to split your damage into two lanes. Most of the time this is discouraged as it turns into you pushing one lane while your teammate tries to push the other. This type of uncoordinated effort never turns out well. If your opponents have already or nearly taken a tower, you know that it will be a 2 tower game. You can then push both lanes as long as you and your teammate are still supporting each other.
    • What you can do is send in a large push (say, Mega Knight, Executioner, Battle Ram, and Royal Ghost) on one lane, and once that's taken your opponents' focus, sneak in a small push on the other tower (say Miner and Minions). It should be strong enough to take the tower to at least half-health, but include cheap and fast troops.
  11. 11
Counter push after defending. This is when you support your leftover troops from a defense and turn them into a threatening push by adding a tank or win condition at the front. Even troops with a sliver of health can deal a lot of damage when hiding behind a tank.
    • For example, you may defend a Giant Balloon push with Mega Minion, Inferno Dragon, and Tornado. Your troops will still be alive, so why not put a Giant of your own down and make your remaining defensive troops turn into a big threat.
  12. 12
Don't repeat the same move if it didn't work out before. If you played Musketeer in the back and it was rocketed, don't do it again. If you played Hog Rider at the bridge twice and don't get a swing on the tower, please don't repeat it. Instead, wait for full elixir and build up a large push with your teammate's support.
    • Once you realize your opponents have a Rocket (or even Lightning, Fireball, and Poison), play your squishy troops where you'd normally place a building, or play them in front of the crown towers. Don't place them in the back unless you are sure their spell is out of cycle.

  • Question
How to I win If I'm bad?

Just keep playing the game. When I first started, I was level 10 in Jungle. You gain experience by finding out new tactics and strategies that work. After two years, I made another account that got to Master II as level 10. You just have to keep playing; it's the only way to improve your skill.
  • Question
What if they have a spelldeck and keep rocketing your troops?

If they have a deck that consists mostly of spells, be patient. Rocket isn't the worst- just don't cluster your troops. Place them far apart, and if needed, bait out their Rocket by placing cards that are an equal value to six elixir. As long as you don't give them value by placing troops near your arena towers, you'll be fine.
  • Question
I'm in arena 3, and I think I have a pretty good deck. Could you check it out? It is Arrows, Skeleton Army, Fireball, Musketeer, Barbarian Barrel, Hunter, Baby Dragon, and Archers.

Although your deck is cheap, you lack any tank/direct damage troop. Try removing Barbarian Barrel, and replacing it with Giant or Golem, as you already have relatively good support troops and spells in your current deck.
