Vaseline, or petroleum jelly, has been around for ages and is a popular product to incorporate into your beauty routine. Though there have been claims that Vaseline can make your eyebrows grow, there aren’t any scientific studies that prove this to be true, but you can definitely try it out to see if it works for you. Even if Vaseline doesn’t help you get thicker eyebrows, it can moisturize and soften them, keep the hairs in place, and add a bit of shine!

How to Apply Vaseline to Your Eyebrows

So far, there’s no research that indicates that Vaseline will make your hair grow faster. Hair growth is mostly a matter of genetics, so there aren’t any magic products out there that could help you get full, thick eyebrows. Some people have noticed a positive difference when they use Vaseline, though, and there’s no harm in trying it out.

  1. 1
Choose fragrance-free Vaseline infused with vitamin E. Some types of Vaseline might be infused with fragrances or other ingredients. Save those for another time and stick with original Vaseline for use on your eyebrows, as fragrances are the most common cause of skin reactions to cosmetics.[1] Look for Vaseline that contains vitamin E, as the antioxidant properties can increase hair growth.[2]
    • If you have particularly dry skin, choose Vaseline with aloe vera in it, too.[3]
    • You could use a generic brand of petroleum jelly instead of the brand Vaseline.
  2. 2
Wash and dry your face. Vaseline creates a barrier on your skin, so you don’t want to trap oil or dirt under it. That means the best time to apply Vaseline is after washing your face. Get your face wet, then wash it with a cleanser formulated for your skin type. Rinse off the cleanser with warm water and gently pat your face dry with a clean towel.[4]

Coat your brows in a thin layer of Vaseline. Put a tiny dot of Vaseline on your finger or a cotton swab. Swipe it over your brow, moving from the inside corner near your nose to the outside edge. Do the same thing on the other side, using a fresh cotton swab or clean finger. That’s it!
    • If you use your fingers to apply the Vaseline, make sure you wash your hands, first.
    • You can repeat the treatment up to 4 times a day.[5]

Try a different product if you have acne-prone skin. Vaseline can clog pores, so it’s not a great product to use if you frequently get breakouts. Instead, look for a non-comedogenic moisturizer, ointment, or brow gel to keep those pesky zits at bay.[6]

Reasons to Use Vaseline

While Vaseline might not contribute to eyebrow growth, it still has a lot of uses. Whether you have dry skin, coarse hairs, or unruly brows, swipe a little Vaseline over them for an instant fix.

  1. 1
Moisturize your brows with Vaseline. Vaseline can definitely moisturize your hair and skin, which could lead to fuller-looking brows.[7] Apply a thin layer of Vaseline over each of your eyebrows. There’s no need to wipe or wash it off—just let it absorb!
  2. 2
Soften your eyebrow hairs with Vaseline. Petroleum jelly is a very hydrating product and can make your hair and skin feel smoother and softer.[8] If you have coarse brow hair, Vaseline might be just the thing for you!
  3. 3
Swipe Vaseline over your eyebrows to keep the hairs in place. Vaseline works just like clear brow mascara for a fraction of the price. Comb your brows out with a spoolie brush, then apply the Vaseline.[9]
    • You can use the spoolie brush to comb through or position the hairs after you apply the Vaseline, too.
    • If you use a brow pencil or other product to fill in your brows, do so after applying the Vaseline, as it could smudge your makeup.

Medical Takeaways

There’s no proof that Vaseline will make your eyebrow hairs grow. However, Vaseline is safe to use around your eye area and there usually aren’t any side effects, so there’s no harm in giving it a try.

Warnings

  • There’s no evidence that other home remedies or natural products, like castor oil, coconut oil, almond oil, jojoba oil, or olive oil, will help your eyebrows grow, either.
