A hookah is a specialty pipe used to smoke tobacco. Though the tobacco is smoked differently than cigarettes, a hookah is not any safer than a cigarette. Smoking from a hookah may actually cause the smoker to inhale more tobacco smoke, since hookah smoking sessions last up to an hour.[1] An hour of hookah smoking is equivalent to smoking a pack of cigarettes.[2] If you are a hookah smoker, there are things you can do to help you quit so you can live a healthier life.
Steps
Deciding to Quit Hookah Smoking

1Make a list of reasons you’re quitting. When you decide to quit smoking hookah, make a list of reasons you are quitting. Carry this list with you. Sometimes you may need a reminder of why you are making this choice. Pull it out each time you are tempted to smoke. Reading this list can help you stay motivated.[3]
- Reasons you may consider quitting hookah include the health benefits, wanting to feel better, being tired of smelling like smoke, wanting to stop wasting money, or setting a good example.[4]

2Decide how to quit. You can either quit hookah smoking by gradually cutting back or stopping cold turkey. Stopping cold turkey may work for some, but for others it might not always work. Sometimes, quitting completely at once is hard, especially if you have tried to quit hookah smoking before and couldn’t. Instead, gradually cut back on the amount of hookah you smoke. Each week or each day, smoke less and less.[5]
- Decide which way it best for you. If you start out by quitting cold turkey, but then find that impossible to stick to, switch to a gradual cutting back of your smoking.

3Choose a quit day. Make a commitment to quitting hookah by choosing a day you want to stop smoking. Make it at least within the next two weeks. Choose a day where nothing is going on, so you can focus solely on quitting.[6]
- Try it on a Sunday or a Monday, which starts off your week with your new goal. Or, stop on a Saturday so you have the weekend to get used to quitting before you have to return to work.

4Refrain from going to hookah bars. Since you are trying to stop smoking hookah, you need to stop going to hookah bars. This just puts you right in front of temptation. Plus, in hookah bars you will be inhaling the smoke, which won’t be very helpful as you try to quit.[7]
- Instead of hookah bars, go to other places. Go to a real bar where smoking isn’t allowed. Go to the movies, a museum, or out shopping. Stay away from places where smoking is allowed.
Getting Help To Quit Smoking

1Join a support group. Support groups are really great for quitting smoking. You can find like-minded people who are going through similar ordeals as you. It helps to talk to people who understand.[8] [9]
- These people might be able to give you some tips and suggestions on how to overcome obstacles and face any problems you’re having.
- The internet can be a great resource when you’re trying to stop smoking Hookah. You can visit forums dedicated to quitting smoking and find an online support group. You can talk to other people who have quit smoking and been through the same thing you are going through.

2Find a counselor. A counselor might be a good option when you are trying to quit smoking. These counselors can help you deal with your addiction and give you steps and tools to help you overcome it. You can meet a counselor individually or talk to one on the phone.[10]
- Quitting coaches can help you identify feelings and activities that trigger your smoking.
- Coaches can help you learn ways to control and cope with smoking urges.
- Coaches can provide information about the health benefits of being smoke-free, how nicotine leaves the body, and anything else you might have questions about.

3Take medication. Quitting smoking on your own may be too difficult. You may face extreme withdrawal symptoms as your body gets used to a reduced amount of nicotine. A smoking medication may help you quit successfully.[11]
- Try a nicotine replacement therapy. These medicines give you a little bit of nicotine as your wean yourself off of it. They come in gum, patches, lozenges, nasal sprays, and inhalers. You can get some of these without a prescription.
- You can also get prescription medicines, such as Buproprion or Varenicline. These help reduce the urge to smoke and helps reduce withdrawal.

4Be prepared for negative effects. Stopping smoking, even hookah smoking, may cause unpleasant side effects. Withdrawal symptoms can be severe, so be ready to deal with those. Withdrawal symptoms may affect your mood and your sleep. You may feel anxious, nervous, depressed, or frustrated. Know these things will happen, so you do not return to hookah to help make you feel better.[12]
- Know that you may have smoke cravings. Replace smoke cravings with a preplanned list of activities or with low-calorie snacks.
Finding Positive Ways To Quit Smoking

1Get physical. One way to stop smoking hookah is to be physical. Engaging in physical activities not only improves overall physical health, but helps your brain release endorphins. Participating in different activities can help you forget about smoking hookah.[13]
- Try any kind of exercise. This includes walking, jogging, cycling, swimming, hiking, gym classes, strength training, dancing, barre, sports, or anything else that gets you moving and your heart pumping.
- Even just moving around as you do daily activities, like taking the dog for a walk and doing housework, can increase your physical activity and help you focus on other things than the hookah smoking.

2Surround yourself with non-hookah smokers. If you are trying to quit smoking hookah, you may have to stop hanging around people who smoke hookah. Surround yourself with people who know your goals and support you. Limit temptation as much as you can.[14]
- If you want to keep your hookah smoking friends, then tell your hookah smoking friends about your decision to quit smoking. Make decisions to meet up at places where you don’t smoke hookah.

3Replace hookah smoking with a new habit. Since hookah smoking is a habit, try replacing one habit for a healthier one. Find a hobby or new activity to take up your time and distract you from your desire to smoke hookah.[15]
- Try taking a class, like a painting class or a cooking class. Read a book or go to the park. Cook a healthy meal or play a game with your family and friends. Anything you can do to distract you from the desire to smoke hookah is a good activity.

4Learn to manage stress. Many people smoke hookah as a stress relief. To help avoid giving into this temptation when you are stressed is to learn to handle your stress. Try yoga, meditating, or deep breathing exercises. Even taking a stroll around the block can help reduce stress.[16]

5Stay positive. Quitting smoking is an extremely difficult endeavor. It may take you a few times before you are successful. Remember to stay positive. You are making healthy changes for your life. Even if you have a setback, like you go back to smoking hookah, remember this is a journey. Don’t give up.[17]
- Look back at your list of reasons you want to quit. Remind yourself why it is so important to you to make this change.
- Reach out to your support group and your friends and family. Don’t be afraid to lean on people during the hard times so they can help you succeed.
- If you think you need help outside of your personal support system, talk to your doctor. They may be able to help you with medication and other treatments.
