How to Make God's Eye

Learn how to make your very own God's eye decoration with yarn and popsicle sticks

The Pueblo and other Native Americans wore special decorations called a God's Eye, which were thought to bring good luck and long life. It's very fun to make. Now you can make your own.

Steps

Place 2 sticks together to form an X. This is the frame for the God's Eye.

Diagonally wrap one side 4 times, then do the opposite side 4 times so it's secure.

Hold the frame in one hand and keep the sticks in place.

With the other hand, wrap the yarn over and around one arm of the X, then over and around the next arm, and so on. Pull the yarn tightly each time and push the yarn down snugly toward the center.

Continue working this way until the God's Eye is completed.

Cut the yarn 3 inches (7.6 cm) from the end of the God's Eye. Take a quilter's needle and tuck the end into the back of the God's Eye to secure.

It really depends on the thickness and/or sturdiness of your sticks. If your sticks are thin, use thin yarn (thick sticks - thick yarn OR thin yarn). The amount of yarn also depends. If you are making a large God's Eye, you would use a large amount of yarn (small God's Eye - smaller amount). This also depends on the thickness of yarn as well. If you are using very thick yarn, you would need to use less yarn because of the space it takes up. If it's thin yarn, use more.
