Pets in Minecraft offer practical purposes as well as aesthetic. Ocelots, for example, will cause creepers to walk away from you, and wolves will attack anything that you attack or anything that hurts you. Go to step one to find out how to get a pet.
Steps
Method 1
Method 1 of 5:
Cats
-
1Fish for a lot of fish. Depending on your success rates and skill in catching ocelots, you will need anywhere from 4-16 raw fish. Make sure you use either raw cod or salmon.
-
2Find an ocelot or cat. They are found in most jungles, however, these can be located far away from your home, so build some temporary shelters along the way. Stray cats can be found in villages.
- A black cat can spawn near witch's huts.

3Approach the ocelot slowly. Even if you're at the player's normal speed, it will run away from you. Approach it while holding the fish and slowly walking up to it. If it creeps toward you, don't move. If you don't move, you can right-click it and after an unknown amount of fish, it will soon switch breeds.
- Use stalk. It will limit your speed, but they can still run away.
-
4Breed the cats! After all that hard work, you don't want your investment going down the drain due to death!
-
5Enjoy your pet cat! Cats repel creepers and phantoms, making them super useful as sentries. They take no fall damage, and will sit on your chests, bed, and furnaces. There are 11 different cat breeds, so if you can, try to get each one.

Method 2 of 5:
Dogs
-
1Kill some skeletons. To tame wolves, you are going to need bones. The largest amount of bones you will need per wolf is four, but bring some extras if you make a mistake.
-
2Find the wolves. They are occasionally found in oak and dark oak forests, but they can be surprisingly rare in your world, so keep hopping around until you find a forest with wolves in it.
-
3Feed the bones to the wolf. Simply hold right click whilst holding a bone, and hearts will appear. Do this until the wolf gets a red collar and you can't feed it any more bones. Be careful not to right-click and hit the wolf, however, for if you do, every wolf within a 64 block radius will become aggressive to you.
-
4Heal and breed your wolf! Feeding any meat to the wolf will heal it, and feeding it meat while another tamed wolf who was also fed is in the region will cause them to breed. If you need to heal your wolf, simply feed it meat without another wolf nearby
-
5Enjoy your pet dog! They will attack mobs that attack you or that you attack, so be careful not to let them get blown up by creepers.

Method 3 of 5:
Foxes
-
1Find sweet berries. Sweet berries will spawn in the taiga biomes. You will need at least two.
-
2Find two foxes. Foxes can be found in taiga, giant tree taiga, and snowy taiga biomes. Foxes can be normal, orange foxes, or rarer, snowy foxes. You can breed both types together, and they will give you a 50/50 chance of which type the baby fox becomes.
- Fence them in or put them on leads so they can't escape.
-
3Keeping the foxes close enough for them to breed, feed them one sweet berry each. Hearts will come out from them after they are fed and they will start circling each other. This will produce a baby fox that trusts you. There is no way to tame naturally spawned foxes, but you can tame bred foxes.
-
4Remove the parents from the baby. The baby fox will trust you, but it will also follow any nearby adult foxes, so if you scare them, they will run away and bring the fox kit with them. Attach a lead to the fox kit and walk away, or kill the parents. If there are no adult foxes nearby a baby that trusts you will follow you. You won't have to keep adult foxes away forever, though. It will grow up.
-
5Enjoy your new pet fox! Foxes can hold all items in their mouths, and perhaps spawn with one. You can get a fox to drop the item it is currently holding by tossing any food but cake at them, and they will pick it up and eat it to restore health. Foxes can also attack mobs that attack you, and passive mobs like chickens. (Be careful-- they can leap over fences!) If you give your fox an enchanted sword, they will use that enchantment when attacking, without harming durability.

Method 4 of 5:
Parrots
-
1Gather wheat seeds, melon seeds, pumpkin seeds, or beetroot seeds.
-
2Find a parrot. Parrots are rare mobs usually found in jungle biomes. There are five different colors of parrots: red, blue, green, cyan, and gray.
-
3Feed the parrot the seeds until hearts come out from it.
-
4Enjoy your pet parrot! Parrots can perch on your shoulder and mimic mob noises. They dance if they are near a jukebox with a music disc inside. They won't take any damage while on your shoulder, but there is one poison: cookies. Feeding a cookie to a parrot will kill it.
- Take good care of your parrot since they cannot be bred. They have no baby form.

Farm Animals
-
1Lure the animal into an enclosed area. Fences with a fence gate make a great barrier, as you can still see the animals but they cannot jump over the blocks. This can be done by holding the respective food, they are as follows
- Sheep, cows, mushroom cows (brown and red) - wheat
- Pigs - carrots, potatoes, and beetroots
- Chickens - any type of seed, and nether wart
- Horses and Donkeys - golden apples or carrots (They will follow wheat and bread, but cannot eat them.)
- Rabbits - Dandelions and carrots (golden works too)
- Bees - Flowers of any kind, including the wither rose. (since they can fly, they don't need a pen.)
-
2Enclose the area in which you lured the animals to. Make sure they can't escape.
-
3Breed the animal. Using the same food that you lured the animal with, feed two of the animals and let them breed. You can then make more animals to breed with, and eat the parents.
