In Minecraft, eggs can be used for a variety of things, like making foods, knocking back mobs and players, and spawning more chickens. However, getting eggs can be a difficult and long process. You may have to wait for baby chickens to grow up before getting eggs, or you may have to go out and find adult chickens and wait 5 to 10 minutes for them to lay an egg. You can also bring chickens back to your base using seeds and farm them so you can get more eggs quickly.
Steps
Farming Chickens
-
1Build an enclosure. You can use fences, walls, or blocks. If you are using blocks, make sure you build them at least 2 blocks high, otherwise the chickens will escape. Make sure you can get in and out but the chickens can't.
- Fences are crafted by using 2 sticks and 4 wooden planks. Open a crafting table and place a stick in the middle of the bottom row and another stick on top of it. Place a plank on both sides of each stick, this will give you 3 fences.
- Walls are crafted by using 6 of the blocks you want the walls to be made of. Fill each slot in the bottom and middle row of a crafting table with a block, they all need to be the same exact type of block for this to work. This will make 6 walls.
-
2Gather seeds. You can use wheat seeds, beetroot seeds, melon seeds, and pumpkin seeds. The type of seed you use does not matter. You will want to gather at least 2 seeds, but gathering more will result in more chickens.
- Wheat seeds can be obtained by breaking wheat plants or grass variants (not the blocks). They may also be found in village chests.[1]
- Beetroot seeds can be obtained by breaking beetroot plants, which can be found in some village farms. They may also be found in chests in villages, end cities, dungeons, mineshafts, and woodland mansions.[2]
- Pumpkin seeds can be obtained by breaking pumpkin stems. You can also place a pumpkin in a crafting table and turn it into seeds, or shear a pumpkin to get seeds. Pumpkin seeds or pumpkin stems can be found in woodland mansions, villages, dungeons, and mineshafts.[3]
- Melon seeds can be obtained by breaking melon stems. You can also put a melon slice in a crafting table to turn it into a seed. Melon seeds or stems can be found in woodland mansions, villages, dungeons, and mineshafts.[4]

3Find at least 2 chickens. The more chickens you can find, the better. Chickens will spawn naturally in the overworld on grass blocks at a light level of 9 or more. In Java Edition, they are most commonly found in jungle hills, jungle edges, and modified jungle edges.[5]
-
4Lure the chickens into the enclosure. Hold the seeds in your hand and slowly lead the chickens to the enclosure. They may not follow you at first, or if you walk too fast they may stop following, so be sure to check as you travel.
-
5Feed the chickens a seed each. Hold the seeds in your hand and use the seeds on each adult chicken you have. Hearts should come out around them when feeding them. Once the chickens are fed, they'll come together for a few seconds and soon a baby chicken will pop out, along with some experience.
-
6Wait for the baby to grow up. Baby chickens will take 20 minutes to become adults, but their growth can be sped up by feeding them seeds.[6] Once they are adults, they can lay eggs every 5 to 10 minutes.
- Breeding or collecting more chickens will give you more eggs.
Collecting Eggs From Chickens
-
1Locate a chicken. Chickens will spawn naturally in the overworld on grass blocks that are at a light level of 9 or higher. In Java Edition, they most commonly spawn in jungle hills, jungle edges, and modified jungle edges.[7]
-
2Wait for the chicken to lay an egg. Adult chickens will lay an egg every 5 to 10 minutes.[8]
- Only adults will lay eggs, baby chickens cannot lay eggs and will also not drop any other loot.
-
3Walk over the dropped egg. Walking over the egg or walking near it will bring it into your inventory as long as it is not already full.
Using Eggs
-
1Make a cake. Eggs are used to make cakes in Minecraft. You will also need 3 wheat, 2 sugar, and 3 buckets of milk to make one. A cake can be crafted by placing a bucket of milk in each slot in the top row of a crafting table, then placing the egg in the middle of the middle row, and a sugar on both sides of the egg. Fill the bottom row with 3 wheat.
- You will need 3 buckets, which can be made using 9 iron ingots and a crafting table. Open the crafting table and place an iron ingot on the left of the middle row, 1 in the middle of the bottom row, and 1 on the right of the middle row. Once you have buckets, you can use them on 3 different cows to get 3 milk buckets.
- Wheat can be obtained by breaking fully grown wheat crops. Wheat may also be found in chests in igloos, woodland mansions, villages, dungeons, pillager outposts, shipwrecks, and underwater ruins.[9]
- Sugar can be obtained by killing witches or by placing sugarcane or honey bottles in a crafting table.[10]
-
2Make pumpkin pie. Eggs are also used in pumpkin pies, along with a pumpkin and sugar. To make a pumpkin pie, you just need to gather these ingredients and place them anywhere in a crafting table.
- Pumpkins can be found in most biomes with grass and air above the grass. They can also be found in villages, woodland mansions, pillager outposts, and shipwrecks.[11]
- Sugar can be obtained by killing witches or by placing sugarcane or honey bottles in a crafting table.
-
3Throw eggs at mobs or players. Eggs can be thrown at mobs or players by holding an egg and using it while aiming at the entity. They deal knockback but no damage. This can be useful for pushing mobs or players over an edge or simply slowing them down. Eggs can also provoke neutral mobs.[12]
-
4Spawn chickens. Every time an egg is thrown, there is a 1/8 chance a baby chicken will spawn. There is a 1/32 chance of an egg spawning 3 chicks, and a 1/256 chance of an egg spawning 4 chicks.[13]
