A series of adventure novels following a narrator known as "I" (ぼく in Japanese). "I" was once enrolled in a special program for geniuses in Houston, Texas, but he washed out and returned to Japan for college, reuniting with his childhood friend, computer engineering genius Kungagisa Tomo. Accompanying Tomo to the private island of an eccentric rich girl, "I" gets involved in a murder mystery and ends up meeting world-famous "contractor" Aikawa Jun, later getting involved in more murder mysteries and various other adventures. The books make use of a dense, psychological style of writing and feature mind-bending plot twists based on the darkness hidden in the characters' psyches. They also showcase Nisio Isin's habit of giving bizarre names to his characters.
Nine novels comprise the main Zaregoto series, starting with The Kubikiri Cycle. The series spun off into the Ningen series. The first two novels, The Kubikiri Cycle and The Kubishime Romanticist, were released in English by Del Rey manga.
