YAWARA! (or Yawara! A Fashionable Judo Girl) is a seinen manga written by Naoki Urasawa. The story is about Yawara Inokuma, a young girl who is talented at judo and is forced to keep practicing by her grandfather, Jigorou Inokuma, who hopes that she will win a gold medal at the Olympics.
The manga series spanned 29 volumes from 1986 to 1993. A 124-episode TV anime adaptation began airing in October 1989; it was directed by Hiroko Tokita and produced by Madhouse and Kitty Films. Additionally, 2 OVAs were later made called Yawara! Soreyuke Koshinuke Kizzu (August 1992), directed by Hiroko Tokita, and Yawara! Special - Zutto Kimi no Koto ga (July 1996), directed by Morio Asaka.
