Time of EVE (イヴの時間, Eve no Jikan) is a six-episode ONA series (later made into a feature film) created by Yasuhiro Yoshiura.

The story is set in a not-too-distant future, where robots are commonplace - and not only do they look like us, they speak like us, and even move like us. However, they are not considered or treated as human, because they were just designed in our image, as tools to carry out our tasks; tools that function according to the commands of their masters and have no emotion. Furthermore, the government has decreed that robots cannot and never will be members of human society.

As time passes, such arbitrary paradigms will inevitably weaken. One day, a high school boy named Rikuo stumbles upon a strange cafe called "Time of Eve" with a single rule of conduct for its visitors: "Within its walls, there must be no discrimination between humans and robots."

What causes the androids to realize their sentience?

In the series, it's hinted that something in the cafe Time of Eve causes the robots to develop or realize human-like sentience, even outside of the cafe. While it's implied that they always had sentience, but was suppressed, as seen in the THX…
