"The Rose of Versailles" (ベルサイユのばら), is a manga written by Riyoko Ikeda. The story follows Oscar François de Jarjayes, a girl raised as a man to become her father's successor as leader of the Palace Guards.
The Rose of Versailles (ベルサイユのばら), also known as Lady Oscar or La Rose de Versailles, is a manga written by Riyoko Ikeda. It has also been adapted into several musicals, as well an anime television series.
The Rose of Versailles focuses on Oscar François de Jarjayes, a girl raised as a man to become her father's successor as leader of the Palace Guards. A brilliant combatant with a strong sense of justice, Oscar is proud of the life she leads, but becomes torn between class loyalty and her desire to help the impoverished as revolution brews among the oppressed lower class.
Also important to the story are her conflicting desires to live life as both a militant and a regular woman, as well as her relationships with Marie Antoinette, Count Axel von Fersen, and servant and best friend André Grandier.

- The original manga for The Rose of Versailles was written by Riyoko Ikeda, and published in the magazine Margaret. It ran from 1972-1973, and finished with a total of 10 volumes.
- A lesser known "sequel" manga to The Rose of Versailles was written by Riyoko Ikeda, titled *Eikou no Napoleon - Eroica". Running from 1986 to 1995 with 12 volumes, it features a number of characters from the original publication.
- The The Rose of Versailles Gaiden series is a selection of short stories written by the author of the main series. They were published in two separate instances - the first in 1974, the second from 1984-1985.
- The anime series for The Rose of Versailles ran for 40 episodes between October 10, 1979 and September 3, 1980. It was produced by the studio Tokyo Movie Shinsha and had two different directors - Tadao Nagahama for episodes 1 to 18, and Osamu Dezaki for the remainder. Dezaki was also the director for the OVA titled The Rose and Women of Versailles, which was released on September 10, 1980.
- There are currently two movies in the The Rose of Versailles franchise.
- The first is a live-action film shot in France titled Lady Oscar, and was released on March 3, 1979.
- The second is titled Inochi Arukagiri Aishite and summarises the entire anime series. It was released in 1987.
- A third film, titled La Rose de Versailles (ベルサイユのばら) is currently in pre-production.
