Space Battleship Yamato (Uchuu Senkan Yamato; also Space Cruiser Yamato) is a classic 1974 anime, directed by Leiji Matsumoto. It has a many remakes, adaptations and sequels. The series is often credited with starting a trend towards more serious anime. It was brought to the English-speaking community dubbed as Star Blazers with some significant modifications.

The inhabitants of earth, in order to combat the hostile alien "Gamilas", build a giant space battleship and venture into space. Once in space, they encounter other hostile aliens, and must continue fighting with the fate of the Earth and humanity at stake.

The anime was the first anime to with the Seiun Award for best media of the year.
