The "Wired" described in the anime is the sum of all global telecommunication networks - starting with the telegraph and ending with the Internet. It is posited in the series that such a network can be built into a system that will allow subconscious communication between people, and then become an equivalent to reality. Lain is a 14-year old shy high-school student, who discovers the Wired and uncovers her true nature during the series.
