Higurashi no Naku Koro ni game promotional art

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (ひぐらしのなく頃に, lit. "When The Cicadas Cry" / Higurashi - When They Cry) is the first game in the "When They Cry" murder mystery series by 07th Expansion.

An anime adaptation was produced by Studio Deen in 2006 and released as a 26-episode season, with its story broken up into six arcs. It follows the lives of Keiichi Maebara and his five friends, Rena, Mion, Shion, Rika, and Satoko, as they set out to unravel the mysteries of their tiny rural town, Hinamizawa. Falling into the psychological thriller, horror, and mystery genres, Higurashi is well-known for the grisly murders, psychophysical tortures, mysterious disappearances, mental breakdowns, violent acts, and plot twists that take place in it.

As of now, this tag encompasses the Higurashi visual novels, the Higurashi manga and all seasons of the Higurashi anime: the first season (including the Cat-Killing Chapter), the second season (Kai), the third season (Rei), and the OVA (Kira). It does not encompass Umineko no Naku Koro ni and its adaptations (see ). Per this meta discussion, these tags should be kept separate.
