S01E04

There's this part where out of 500 battles they each had 158 losses, 158 wins and 184 ties.

enter image description here

  1. What was going on? How did they even get to all these points?

  2. Why didn't they just do eg 1st to 5 points (or 1st to 5 wins, where draws don't count as 0.5 points)? Or like Armageddon in chess or in 9LX eg Sora gets White and an extra minute but Shiro gets draw odds as Black?

The point seems to be that they are evenly matched and they can't get enough points for one to win over the other. – Joe W Feb 05 '23 at 22:26
  • It's just a way to show that they were very evenly matched and reinforce that they are an equal pair rather than a main character and sidekick dynamic. The fact that they let it go on so long might be because they didn't want a tiebreak mechanism, they wanted a clear victory which neither could achieve. And based on the games in front of them, the points may be across multiple games not just chess. – TheGamer007 Feb 05 '23 at 23:46
  • @TheGamer007 This is a good answer if true or if you can provide evidence based on other parts of the anime, manga or LN that they would like to play this way: 'they didn't want a tiebreak mechanism, they wanted a clear victory which neither could achieve' – BCLC Feb 06 '23 at 05:47
  • I put it in a comment rather than an answer exactly because I think there isn't any evidence. You might be reading too much into the scene. – TheGamer007 Feb 06 '23 at 13:23
